BJ Penn: ‘There’s more opportunity for me to get three UFC belts at 145’
After coming out of an 18-month retirement in January, BJ Penn will finally be making his UFC comeback. “The Prodigy” will be facing Yair Rodriguez on January 15th at UFC Fight Night 103 in Phoenix. Hopefully.
Penn was supposed to headline UFC Manila last October 15th against Ricardo Lamas, but a rib injury forced him to the sidelines. While his return fight has yet to happen, the former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion already has his sights on an unprecedented accomplishment: a third world title.
"There's more opportunity for me to get three UFC belts at 145 than going to 185," Penn said on ESPN.com’s 5ive Rounds podcast. "I already feel really confident nobody will be able to get the 155- and 170-pound belts. I want to get one more world title. Three titles at three weight classes, and without a doubt 145 is my best option."
But before even attempting to do so, Penn must first go through a dangerous opponent in Rodriguez, who is 5-0 in the UFC so far. For his part, the 37-year-old Hilo native is confident that he will get the job done in convincing fashion.
"So, what you're saying is when I make this look easy on Jan. 15, I'm the f------ man, is that what you're telling me? It's not a difficult [fight] at all. He's a very good guy, but I feel like I'm training with very good guys.”
“I have a good team around me and I don't feel anything is anywhere near out of my league.”
