Lomachenko vs. Walters results and video: Lomachenko makes Walters quit after round 7
WBO junior lightweight (130 lbs) champion Vasyl Lomachenko dominated Nicholas Walters in tonight’s HBO Boxing main event. The Ukrainian successfully defended his belt by putting on a boxing clinic on the Jamaican power-puncher, who literally quit.
Round 1 was a feeling out process, but Lomachenko was the busier fighter towards the end of the round, and tagged Walters with a quick right hook before the bell sounded. Both men frequently stuck out their jabs. Walters kept a high defensive guard. The Jamaican landed a sharp uppercut and a bodyshot in the 2nd round. Lomachenko’s best punch of the 2nd was a straight left with about 30 seconds left. Walters primarily found success to the body, while Lomachenko’s jab and counterpunching was his best work. Vasyl cracked Walters with a short right, and finished strongly with a flurry.
The fight opened up considerably in the 4th. Walters went down but was clearly pushed, and Lomachenko was warned for pushing down on the head. Lomachenko scored with a gorgeous combination, tagging Walters with stinging straight lefts that had Walters’ attention. Round 5 was a dominant round for Lomachenko, who frustrated Walters visibly. They also flat out stopped fighting in the final 5 seconds. Lomachenko toyed with Walters in the 6th and succeeded with a seamless series of blows to the head. Walters hit Lomachenko hard to the body but wasn’t throwing or landing as often as Vasyl.
Round 7 was Lomachenko’s most aggressive one up to this point. He had Walters cornered at one point and went to work with blinding handspeed and dazzling accuracy. Walters was dinged by a hard left uppercut, and Lomachenko was just completely dominating to the point where Walters seemed visibly discouraged. He wasn’t seriously hurt at any point (or at least it wasn’t visibly obvious), but the gulf in class was just so wide and Lomachenko’s sharpness was on full display.
In between rounds, Tony Weeks asked if Walters wanted to continue, he did not want to, and rather anticlimactically, the fight was over. A one-sided win for Lomachenko over a world-class opponent.
Official result: Vasyl Lomachenko (7-1, 5 KOs) def. Nicholas Walters (30-1-1, 24 KOs) via TKO (retirement) at round 7 to remain WBO junior lightweight champion
Walters blamed his performance on his inactivity, having not fought since December 2015. Of course, it should be noted he turned down a Lomachenko fight in June after not accepting a career-high $550,000 fight purse, and tonight he ended up with a publicly announced $300,000 purse.
