Newcomer Gerald Meerschaert gets fill-in duties at UFC Fight Night 102
Gerald Meerschaert, a 10-year pro with 32 career fights, is finally getting his shot in the UFC.
UFC officials recently announced Meerschaert (24-8 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has replaced injured Oluwale Bamgbose (6-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) and now fights fellow middleweight Joe Gigliotti (7-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 102. MMAOddsBreaker.com first reported the matchup.
UFC Fight Night 102 takes place Dec. 9 at Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. The entire card streams on UFC Fight Pass, though the bout order hasn’t been finalized.
Meerschaert recently earned a submission victory over Chase Waldon at RFA 45 to capture the organization’s vacant middleweight title (watch the highlights above). It marked his fifth straight win and moved him to 9-1 since April 2013. The Roufusport fighter now has 22 stoppages (five knockouts and 17 submissions) in 24 career wins.
He meets Gigliotti, a former WSOF and RFA fighter who signed with the UFC earlier this year after opening his career with a 7-0 mark that included seven stoppages. However, in his promotional debut, the 23-year-old Arizona-based fighter suffered a submission loss to Trevor Smith at UFC Fight Night 92.
